Applying our Noise Reduction Technology, SoundBounce, to the Aerospace Industry

SoundBounce by Lios, a thixotropic advanced acoustic material, used for noise reduction.

We are partnering with the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of their Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP) to deploy SoundBounce as a Fairing Acoustic Protection (FAP) used in space flight. This means that we are qualifying SoundBounce to adapt its high-acoustic performance for space.

SoundBounce is an advanced acoustic material with thixotropic properties, meaning it becomes less viscous when energy has been applied to it. At Lios, we use this unique property to reduce noise, creating a metamaterial with capabilities poised to change the acoustics market with superior noise reduction than current market-leading solutions. It is thinner, lighter, more adaptable, non-toxic and more effective at reducing noise.

SoundBounce has many potential applications in space, including:

  1. Acoustic Isolation - Launch vehicle payload fairings

  2. Vibration Damping - Payload and sensor protection

  3. Small Launch Vehicles - Mini launcher FAP

As part of our ongoing partnership with ESA, SoundBounce has achieved TRL 3 (Technology Readiness Level), having demonstrated acoustic and light-weight performance. Lios has worked tirelessly to reduce SoundBounce’s area density by over 6x to qualify its light-weight feasibility. We are now working to achieve TRL 5, which is the validation of SoundBounce in the relevant environment e.g. space flight, at a larger scale.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with ESA and exploring further opportunities for SoundBounce’s applications in the aerospace industry.
